Truth About Wellbeing Part 5: Wellbeing Is Everyone’s Responsibility

it’s crucial to recognise that wellbeing isn’t a solitary pursuit. It’s a shared responsibility.

As the festive season approaches—a time for joy, reflection, and connection—it’s crucial to recognise that wellbeing isn’t a solitary pursuit. It’s a shared responsibility. The Me-We-Us self-care model, developed by Jarden & Jarden, offers a compelling framework for understanding and strengthening wellbeing at three levels:

  • Me: Individual wellbeing— nurturing our mental, emotional, and physical health

  • We: Relational wellbeing—strengthening our relationships with those closest to us

  • Us: Collective wellbeing— building community bonds through contributions to the wider community

By addressing wellbeing across these levels, we create a ripple effect that uplifts not only ourselves but also those around us and the communities we are part of.

What Can We Do to Strengthen Wellbeing in the Festive Season?

Me: Individual Wellbeing - Nurturing the Self

  • Prioritise Self-Care: Amid the busy holiday season, make time for activities that bring you peace and joy, like reading, meditating, or enjoying a hobby.

  • Set Healthy Boundaries: Say no to invitations or tasks that overwhelm you, and give yourself permission to rest.

  • Reflect on Gratitude: Keep a gratitude journal to remind yourself of the people and moments that bring meaning to your life.

We: Relational Wellbeing - Strengthening Relationships

  • Give the Gift of Presence: Spend meaningful time with family, friends, or teammates, focusing on connection and shared activities.

  • Practice Active Listening: Be fully present when others share their thoughts, offering empathy and support.

  • Express Value and Appreciation: A heartfelt thank-you or compliment can go a long way in strengthening bonds and uplifting those around you.

Us: Collective Wellbeing - Building Community Bonds

  • Volunteer Together: Support a local charity, food bank, or community initiative as a family or team.

  • Create Inclusive Spaces: Host gatherings that welcome everyone and foster a sense of belonging.

  • Engage in Traditions: Participate in community events like carolling, holiday markets, or cultural celebrations that bring people together.

By adopting the Me-We-Us model, we recognise that wellbeing is a shared effort. Small actions—checking in on a friend, showing kindness to a stranger, or taking care of ourselves—can collectively make a significant impact.
